Crabtree Watervale Wines

Crabtree Watervale Wines is a small, family-run winery in the Watervale sub-region of South Australia's Clare Valley. The estate dates back to 1849, when it was an orchard called Pomona; its stone homestead from that time is heritage-listed and one of the oldest buildings in the area. From the 1930s the Glaetzer family planted vines in earnest and renamed it Fairview, and vines they planted in the 1940s still produce fruit for Crabtree today.

The current owners are Jason and Cristy, with their son Hugh and Jason's parents Richard and Leanne, who farm on the Yorke Peninsula. Jason worked at Kilikanoon before deciding to go out on his own. They bought the winery just as COVID arrived, and Cristy, a nurse, moved into running the cellar door.

The vineyard is managed sustainably with minimal intervention, and the hand-made wines, made with winemaker Andrew Kenny, showcase Watervale, especially its Riesling.
