Lowestoft is a historic Tasmanian estate on the banks of the Derwent River, overlooking the Mona museum. Its homestead, built between 1839 and 1850, is one of Tasmania's oldest. In 1986 owner Bernard McKay was asked to plant vines to supply Claudio Alcorso's Moorilla winery across the river, and a 3-hectare, densely planted vineyard of Pinot Noir from Moorilla cuttings was established.
Peter Fogarty, founder and executive chairman of Fogarty Hall, came to Tasmania in 2017 in pursuit of world-class Pinot Noir and bought Lowestoft in 2019. It now represents the Fogarty family's luxury Tasmanian wines.
New Zealand-born winemaker Liam McElhinney, who has worked in Marlborough, France, Canada and the United States, made the 2022 La Maison Pinot Noir that won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, and was shortlisted for Winemaker of the Year in the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion.
