Punch was started in 2005 by James and Claire Lance when they took over Lance's Vineyard at St Andrews in the Yarra Valley after David and Catherine Lance retired. David, founder of Diamond Valley Vineyards, chose the 20-acre site in 1975 and planted it in 1976, adding a close-planted Pinot Noir plot in 1989.
After the February 2009 bushfires destroyed the crop, neighbouring growers sold them fruit, giving rise to the Friends of Punch label. Punch received five red stars in the 2022 Halliday Wine Companion; its cellar door has closed and sales are now online.
