Rising

Rising makes small-batch wines from the Rising Vineyard near St Andrews, in the Nillumbik Shire on the wilder, bush-fringed edge of the Yarra Valley. Rising up to 245 metres, the vineyard reaches out of the valley on slopes facing every direction. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate, with small parcels of Shiraz, Semillon, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Savagnin and Sauvignon Blanc.

The soils come from ancient marine sediments laid down 440 to 385 million years ago, weathered into thin, rocky, low-nutrient soils: lighter loams on the crests and more clay on the lower slopes, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones planted across them.

Winemaker Anthony cut his teeth in the Hunter Valley before moving to the Yarra in 2006 for cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. He is one of a new generation championing minimal intervention from vineyard to bottle.
