Walter

Walter Wines is a family producer in Mudgee, on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, about 260 kilometres north-west of Sydney. Its vineyards were planted in 1994 with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, followed by Shiraz and more Chardonnay in 1996, and other varieties since.

The vineyards are within the old Putta Bucca Estate subdivision, a name the family uses for its wines, along with Federation Hill. That was the name locals gave to the site of a picnic held in January 1901 to celebrate the birth of the Commonwealth of Australia, where the vineyards now grow, and it is used for the premium range. Walter Wines was first listed in the Halliday Wine Companion in 2013 with a four-star rating.

The cellar door, off Tinja Lane past the Woodleigh vines, looks out over pastures and hills, with a seasonal menu of local produce and picnics outdoors.
