McWilliam’s

McWilliam's Wines began in 1877, when Samuel McWilliam planted vines at his Sunnyside property near Corowa in southern New South Wales. The family moved its focus to the Riverina, where its Hanwood winery near Griffith remains the home of the business and its barrel-shaped cellar door.

Over six generations McWilliam's became one of the most influential names in Australian wine. In the 1930s it bought Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley and kept on the great winemaker Maurice O'Shea, and it later expanded into regions including Coonawarra, the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba and the Canberra District. It also established the Maurice O'Shea Award, one of the Australian wine industry's most prestigious honours, and has been a leading exhibitor at the Sydney Royal Wine Show.

After McWilliam's went into administration in 2020, its brands were acquired by Calabria Family Wines. The range includes Hanwood fortifieds such as its 30-year-old Tawny, the 1877 range and single-vineyard wines, and the winery has been rated five red stars in the Halliday Wine Companion.
